Review – Dragon Guardian: Ao No Shishi

There’s one more band with a dragon in their name. Symphonic-speed-power metal… I dunno how to label it, but what matters is the great sound for those who really enjoy this kind of metal. Maybe, anime fans would know better ‘bout Dragon Guardian, cause it can’t be denied the major anime influence only by taking a glimpse at this album cover. What is really curious is the band site, as soon as you enter it fells like a RPG game. Or maybe, I accessed the wrong website. LOL… anyway, that a look at http://dragon-guardian.com and see for yourself.

Regarding Ao no shishi. My poor Japanese knowledge tells me that Ao no shishi means something like a blue samurai... by reading the kanjis, there’s a “shi” that I dunno what means. Anyway, this is a end 2010 release, a short album, only 6 songs, however very intense and straight forward. The weakness of the band, in my opinion, is the vocals. Sometimes they’re off-tune.. Yet, it’s still very interesting how the band fit the lyrics inside their melodies. It’s a very good dynamic, and despite the negatives aspects, the result is a great musicianship.

This is definitely an album for listen in those rushing-hurry moments. For those who enjoy anime, I think you’ll love it. For those who simply enjoy metal (power, symphonic, etc), it worth a listen. Best songs: “Ao no Shishi” and “Kyo ni Ikirumono”.

Rating: 9.5
Just watch a medley compillation below:

Review: Lemmy The Movie – 49% Motherf**ker. 51% Son a Bitch

This is heavy… reviewing this more than well-deserved tribute won’t be easy. This documentary is an awesome masterpiece of the lifestyle and the values of an idol, a legend, a mythical figure with dozen of names just enforcing his true importance in heavy metal history. Lemmy is a lesson in life. I am not talking about a lesson of how to survive this long using drugs or alcohol but about the importance of being yourself. The best of this documentary is to focus in Lemmy’s authenticity and to show that behind the myth, there is a great guy which cares with people around him.

I dare you to name one artist in music that had dedicated a song to his roadie crew besides Lemmy. In fact, the connection between them is quite impressive. There is even a scene of Lemmy singing Happy B-Day to one of them… which artist in his level of influence and importance in music would do that? Man, that’s what I call simplicity and care. Well, he was a roadie once for Hendrix and maybe had had the same treatment. And there are also some histories related to this fact in film. In fact there are a lot of Lemmy’s facts… a person which had lived in the scene since early 70’s just doing things in his way, must have a lot of facts. He created Heavy Metal in the fastest and rawest it became. Heavy Metal wouldn’t became what is today without Motörhead. Thanks for kicking Lemmy, Hawkwind!

Another good part of the documentary are the testimonials… Alice Cooper, Ozzy, Slash, Dee Snider, Pepper Keenan, Scott Ian, Joan Jett are some of the guest to attest the importance of Lemmy. The negative point of this documentary (yes, there is a negative point) is… Metallica. Why everything that is produced related to Heavy Metal must have something about Metallica in it, goddamit? OK  they play Dammage Cage, a Motörhead song… but somebody please tell me why producers spent at least 15 minutes of an awesome documentary related to a person a thousand times more true in his career with Metallica? This seems so commercial that I decided to mention. Sorry if you are still a Metallica fan, but that’s my opinion.

And it is also my opinion that the best way to celebrate an icon or a legend is when he is alive. I think Ronnie hasn’t had the tribute he really deserved. Ronnie was another lesson of live that deserved a tribute, no doubt about it. Well, I can’t think about any other icon in Heavy Metal who deserves something similar. Sorry, I forgot to mention King Diamond! I hope movie industry prepare a tribute to King Diamond.

The definition of Lemmy also comes from the combination of Jack and Cola, gambling, women, speed and loud music. And nazi stuff… in the movie you can see Lemmy shooting in a Czech tank and showing his second world war memorabilia.

Lemmy is alive ladies and gentlemen and coming to Brazil… again! God saves Lemmy…

Hail to Heavy Crew and Lemmy,
Stein

Deus salve Lemmy...

Hail to Heavy Crew e Lemmy,
Stein

Camerata's Memorabilia: Corrosion of Conformity

One of these days I was re-reading my review of Crowbar’s Sever the Wicker Hand and I started to think about Doom Metal history. The first band that came to my mind was Down which is a mix of some of the best musicians of the genre. I started to listen to some songs and then trying to remember the name of Kirk’s partner in guitar of Down, I got to Pepper Keenan and then to his  Corrosion of Conformity. This is certainly the oldest and finest school of Doom Metal/ Crossover/Sludge, or whatever you want to call it.

I remember that I had the cool skull of Corrosion of Conformity in my high school notebook. I just had Deliverance (1995) album at that time and that was enough for me. And then they were at the unforgettable Nativity in Black playing Sabbath’s Lord of this World. Nice job. My favorites from Deliverance were Seven Days, Broken Man and Deliverance. And then I realized I stopped in time in relation to them. Man, a fourteen years blackout of Corrosion’s work. How come?

Well I needed to get back in time and listen to their most recent albums. In a random sample of 3 songs of each of their recent album, I got a good impression of what I had listened. Wiseblood (1996) is a very qualified album and in my opinion it was a continuation of Deliverance. Bottom Feeder is a hell of a sound with an amazing instrumental work and an interesting mixture of virtuosity and tempos. Going Forward, America’s Volume Dealer (2000) is an average album that has its best moments in songs like Rather See You Dead. Nothing special about it.

Finally their most recent album In the Arms of God (2005) which they reached again a heavy and furious sound. Dirty Hard Empty Pockets it is the best example of it. Insane sound! I recommend my experience of getting back in touch to their work, if you are not familiar with their sound anymore. In case you never heard COC, see below the video of Albatross which is a nice piece of their work in Deliverance. I really don’t know if they are back but I read a post in their website that they are composing something. Let’s wait and see.

That’s it. Enjoy this good band

Hail to Heavy Crew,
Stein

Eu me lembro que eu tinha o crânio do Corrosion of Conformity em meu caderno no colegial. E então eles tocaram no inesquecível Nativity in Black Sabbath tocando Lord of this World. Belo trabalho. Meus favoritos do Deliverance foram Seven Days, Broken Man e Deliverance.

Dirty Hands Empty Pockets é o melhor exemplo disso.

Review – Rhapsody Of Fire The Cold Embrace of Fear

To be true, I’ve never heard an audiobook before. Perhaps, this is the best definition to The Cold Embrace of Fear. Or one could call it a movie without images, a sensorial movie for the philosophers. This is an EP in 7 acts, and as far I can remember, there’re only 1 or 2 real songs in it. The other “acts” is all about some sort of a medieval story (typical when we talk about Rhapsody of Fire). Anyway, I didn’t pay attention to the narrative and dialogues, and in addition, I never had all the feeling required to understand the message (if there’s one). For me, this is like those Dungeons & Dragons tales, except the fact there’s one great song within the story.

As regards to the song, it is really nice. It’s the Act III: The Ancient Fire of Har-Kuun. We can notice all classic elements which is classic to the band. Certainly the fans would be interested. For those who doesn’t enjoy that much, or is really bored to the same cheesy medieval-fantasy stuff from the band, I have to say it will not aggregate anything new. However, we can’t deny Luca Turilli and Alex Staropoli’s great virtuosity, which once again is the main highlight in this album, as usual. It’s worth mentioning Act VI. I dare anyone to say this doesn’t sounds like Manowar. In fact, I believe Eric Adams would do a better performance on this track than Fabio Lione.

I used to be a Rhapsody fan since Legendary Tales. But when they added “Of Fire” on their name, I got outdated since that time. Actually, it became a little tiring to hear all the same things along the years, I dunno…  Anyway, in my opinion the purpose of a music album is to hear songs, not stories. I wander if there is anyone who think Warriors Prayer is Manowar’s best song?!?! Bottom line: good artistic work, a Broadway-Roman play, but speaking of music, It owes a lot.

Talvez esta seja minha melhor definição para The Cold Embrace of Fear.

Trata-se do 3º Ato: The Ancient Fire of Har-Kuun.

Review – Mr. Big What If...

They’re back! What If…, in my opinion, is one of the best releases so far in 2011. Of course, it’s too early to say this, but anyway, I think this is at least one of the best Mr. Big albums. Counting with the original line-up (Eric Martin, Billy Sheehan, Pat Torpey and Paul Gilbert), this album shows that the band still very integrated, very tuned to each other.

For those who don’t know, or know only a little: It is unquestionable the impressive technical quality of Mr. Big musicians. Just remember that Billy Sheehan played with Steve Vai during several occasions, and Paul Gilbert was a G3 member. And yet, I highly recommend listening to their solo projects such as Niacin and Paul’s jobs in Japan. Eric Martin is a special being: he looks the same since 1 trillion years ago, no kidding! Just check it out! The best thing is, that besides the looks, his voice is also the very same perfect passionate voice from Mr.Big and Lean Into It. I was wandering how would sound What If, if Mr. Big asked back Richie Kotzen to join the band and share the guitars with Paul Gilbert… Whoa!!!

Regarding the new album, all I have to say is: Fantastic! It’s by far more mature, more sophisticated, more technical, bluesier, more hard rock, more everything! Those who expect something more ballad, maybe they got disappointed. This is a true rocker made album, definitely!

Highlights: Undertow, American Beauty, Nobody Left to Blame, Still Ain’t Enough for Me, As Far As I Can See (reminds me Richie Kotzen phase), I Won’t Get In My Way (my favorite one), Around the World (amazing bass-guitar duets).

Bottom line: Fantastic release, as I put before, a hard rock bluesy album that will keep playing in my mind for a long time! What if is definitely recommended!

Musicalidade perfeita! Talvez para aqueles que esperavam um álbum-balada, What If tenha decepcionado. O álbum é definitivamente feito pra true rockers!

Destaques: Undertow, American Beauty, Nobody Left to Blame, Still Ain’t Enough for Me, As Far As I Can See (me lembra fase Richie Kotzen), I Won’t Get In My Way (a melhor), Around the World (fantástico dueto baixo-guitarra).

Definitivamente recomendado! Nota: 10!

Dali’s Dilemma – Where are they?

I’m asking this, ‘coz my cd rack was so messed up that I had to re-organize everything, and I found this particular cd, that I really love, but I simply forgot that I owned it.

For those who don’t know, this is definitely a MUST HAVE masterpiece of progressive metal album. Let me put this way: Manifesto for Futurism is as good as “Images and Words” and “Awake”. Everything in this album is perfect. From the great cover that really looks like a Salvador Dali’s painting, to the band’s awesome musicianship and technique.

Mind blowing album! In my opinion this is one of the best prog projects ever made. I’m not talking about super bands, demigods players, famous musicians, etc. This is pure and simple good music!

Hope one day, they reunite and record some new stuff… While it doesn’t happen, just listen the opening track from Dali’s Dilemma Manifesto for Futurism.

Enjoy!

Ed

Dali’s Dilemma – Por onde anda?

Heavy Camerata Metal Overview – February 2011

In February heavy metal engines started to run faster. Bad luck in Slayer crew, Lemmy’s engaged in charity and Ozzy’s commercial with Justin Bieber were some of the most important facts. Check it out the February overview in opinion of Heavy Camerata crew:

SLAYER IN BAD LUCK

Bad news for Slayer fans during its appearance in Sidney: after replacement of guitarist Jeff Hanneman, it was Tom Araya’s turn to get back to the hospital after his back surgery canceling another Slayer concert.  Tom Araya underwent back surgery in early 2010 which forced the band off the road for a period of several months. After being said in specialized midia that he had now an ear infection, his wife came up to inform that the information is not true.

SLAYER is on the road without Jeff Hanneman, who underwent emergency surgery on his right arm late last month after contracting a serious infection, possibly caused by a spider bite. He is now recuperating at home and he will return to the SLAYER lineup as soon as he has fully recovered. Hanneman was diagnosed with necrotizing fasciitis, an infection caused by bacteria which can destroy skin, fat, and the tissue covering the muscles. The disease sometimes is called "flesh-eating" bacteria. His temporary replacement is Gary Holt from EXODUS.
Better-quality fan-filmed footage of the Brisbane performance can be viewed below.

MANOWAR’S NEW ALBUM

MANOWAR is scheduled to return to the studio in April to resume work on its long-awaited new album, "Hammer Of The Gods", according to its official web site.

Donnie Hamzikis officially back in the band and according to Joey DeMaio this changed everything for them. "Hammer Of The Gods" was previously described as the first installment of "The Asgard Saga", the band's unique multimedia fantasy adventure with best-selling author Wolfgang Hohlbein.

Other sources informed that in addition to performing MANOWAR classics, the band will play its debut album, 1982's "Battle Hymns", in its entirety in its recent tour.

OZZY’S FACTS - SEPULTURA TO OPEN BRAZILIAN SHOW AND COMMERCIAL WITH JUSTIN BIEBER

Brazilian band SEPULTURA will support OZZY OSBOURNE for two shows in April
Apr. 02 - São Paulo, Brazil - Anhembi
Apr. 05 - Brasilia, Brazil - Ginasio Nilson Nelson
SEPULTURA performed its classic 1991 album, "Arise", in its entirety during the group's headlining performance at the 16-year anniversary of the Manifesto Bar in São Paulo, Brazil on December 11, 2010.

Roy Z. (JUDAS PRIEST, HALFORD, BRUCE DICKINSON, HELLOWEEN) is going to produce the SEPULTURA’s next CD, forecasted to May via Nuclear Blast Records.

COMMERCIAL

A commercial featuring the Mad Man Ozzy Osbourne and teenager singer Justin Bieber was shot in January and shown for the first time during the third quarter of the Super Bowl. Best Buy ran an ad featuring Ozzy Osbourne trying to film a commercial, getting confused by technology and being replaced by Justin Bieber.

Best Buy will re-air the Ozzy Osbourne and Justin Bieber commercial during the 83rd annual Academy Awards with an alternate ending chosen by Facebook voters.
One insider estimates that Bieber made at least $1 million for the ad.

LEMMY KILMISTER - CHARITY AND MOVIE

Emergency Haiti 2010 charity single put together MOTÖRHEAD's Lemmy Kilmister, bassist Rudy Sarzo (OZZY OSBOURNE, QUIET RIOT, WHITESNAKE, DIO, BLUE ÖYSTER CULT), veteran British female hard rockers GIRLSCHOOL and 25 young musicians from Cornwall's live youth music project Livewire, to raise money for the victims of the Haiti earthquake.

The project which includes the cover of the 1980 GIRLSCHOOL classic "Emergency" is also dedicated to late GIRLSCHOOL guitarist Kelly Johnson and legendary heavy metal singer Ronnie James Dio (BLACK SABBATH, DIO, HEAVEN & HELL,RAINBOW, ELF).

Kelly Johnson passed away on July 15, 2007 after a six-year battle with cancer of the spine.
Ronnie James Dio died of stomach cancer on the morning of May 16, 2010 at the age of 67.
He was renowned throughout the world as one of the greatest and most influential vocalists in heavy metal history.

MOVIE

The long-awaited documentary of life and career of Lemmy was released in US in Feb, 2011. "Lemmy" will be released on DVD by Entertainment One on January 24, 2011. Directors/producers Greg Olliver and Wes Orshoski spent three years following Kilmister around the globe — which must have been an awesome experience.

"Lemmy" features appearances by influent personalities as METALLICA, Dave Grohl, Ozzy Osbourne, Slash, Billy Bob Thornton and pro wrestler Triple H.
2010 marks the 35th anniversary of the birth of MOTÖRHEAD, which features Kilmister, guitarist Phil Campbell and drummer Mikkey Dee.

The official trailer for "Lemmy" can be seen below

GARRY MOORE’S DEATH

Legendary Thin Lizzy’s guitarist Gary Moore died in his sleep yesterday morning, hours after checking into the five-star Kempinski Hotel in Estepona on the Costa del Sol, Spain with an unnamed female friend. He was 58 years old.

As long as a postmortem analysis revealed suspect of heart attack, forensic experts requested further tests on tissue samples taken from his body ahead of a final report.

A Spanish police spokesman said, "Mr. Moore died of natural causes and his death is not in any way suspicious. An investigating magistrate has opened a standard inquiry to determine the exact cause of death."

A British tabloid reported apparently erroneously that Moore choked on his vomit after knocking back champagne and brandy before being discovered around 4 a.m.
