Camerata's Memorabilia: Corrosion of Conformity

One of these days I was re-reading my review of Crowbar’s Sever the Wicker Hand and I started to think about Doom Metal history. The first band that came to my mind was Down which is a mix of some of the best musicians of the genre. I started to listen to some songs and then trying to remember the name of Kirk’s partner in guitar of Down, I got to Pepper Keenan and then to his  Corrosion of Conformity. This is certainly the oldest and finest school of Doom Metal/ Crossover/Sludge, or whatever you want to call it.

I remember that I had the cool skull of Corrosion of Conformity in my high school notebook. I just had Deliverance (1995) album at that time and that was enough for me. And then they were at the unforgettable Nativity in Black playing Sabbath’s Lord of this World. Nice job. My favorites from Deliverance were Seven Days, Broken Man and Deliverance. And then I realized I stopped in time in relation to them. Man, a fourteen years blackout of Corrosion’s work. How come?

Well I needed to get back in time and listen to their most recent albums. In a random sample of 3 songs of each of their recent album, I got a good impression of what I had listened. Wiseblood (1996) is a very qualified album and in my opinion it was a continuation of Deliverance. Bottom Feeder is a hell of a sound with an amazing instrumental work and an interesting mixture of virtuosity and tempos. Going Forward, America’s Volume Dealer (2000) is an average album that has its best moments in songs like Rather See You Dead. Nothing special about it.

Finally their most recent album In the Arms of God (2005) which they reached again a heavy and furious sound. Dirty Hard Empty Pockets it is the best example of it. Insane sound! I recommend my experience of getting back in touch to their work, if you are not familiar with their sound anymore. In case you never heard COC, see below the video of Albatross which is a nice piece of their work in Deliverance. I really don’t know if they are back but I read a post in their website that they are composing something. Let’s wait and see.

Um dia desses, eu estava relendo a minha análise de Sever The Wicker Hand do Crowbar e eu comecei a pensar sobre a história do Doom Metal. A primeira banda que eu pensei foi o Down que é uma mistura de alguns dos melhores músicos do gênero. Comecei a ouvir algumas músicas deles e depois tentando lembrar o nome do parceiro de Kirk na guitarra do Down, eu cheguei ao nome de Pepper Keenan e, em seguida ao seu Corrosion of Conformity. Esta banda é certamente é a old school do Doom Metal / Crossover / Sludge, ou o como você quiser chamar esse gênero.

Eu me lembro que eu tinha o crânio do Corrosion of Conformity em meu caderno no colegial. Eu só tinha o álbum Deliverance (1995) naquela época e foi suficiente para mim. E então eles tocaram no inesquecível Nativity in Black Sabbath tocando Lord of this World. Belo trabalho. Meus favoritos do Deliverance foram Seven Days, Broken Man e Deliverance. E então eu percebi que parei no tempo em relação a eles. Cara, um apagão de 14 anos no trabalho do COC. Como assim?

Bem, eu precisava voltar no tempo e ouvir seus álbuns mais recentes. Em uma amostra aleatória de três canções de cada um dos seus álbuns, em geral, eu tive uma boa impressão do que eu escutei. 

Wiseblood (1996) é um álbum muito qualificado e em minha opinião, foi uma continuação do Deliverance. Bottom Feeder é um puta som com um incrível trabalho instrumental e uma interessante mistura de ritmos e virtuosismo. Avançando America's Volume Dealer (2000) é um álbum médio que tem seus melhores momentos em canções como Rather See You Dead. Nada de especial.

Finalmente seu mais recente álbum In The Arms of God (2005) que atingiu novamente um som pesado e furioso. Dirty Hands Empty Pockets é o melhor exemplo disso. Som insano! Eu recomendo a minha experiência de voltar a ter contato com o trabalho deles novamente, se você não mais estiver familiarizado com o som. Eu realmente não sei se eles estão na ativa, mas eu li um post no site deles que estão compondo alguma coisa. É esperar pra ouvir.
