I guess I could never say that Queensryche has taken something from another band to put in their sound given their originality and their one-of-a-kind characteristics. The opposite is definitely true as Queensryche has been inspiration for amazing bands like Dream Theater. Queensryche is one of these unique bands that keep surprising their fans at each new release. Experts in conceptual albums, the band still exhales inspiration and talent after 30 years of career. One of the best releases of 2011, Dedicated to Chaos takes Queensryche tradition of experimentalism and avant gard to another level. This album just hit me at the first time I`ve listened without any difficulty.
For those who expected something in line with all time classic Operation Mindcrime or their last album American Soldier (which particularly I didn’t like that much), I may say that you may feel a little disappointed. Their heavy side is far away of Dedicated to Chaos but their originality and inspiration are all there. As a good wine experience, as you taste the album you will find elements of Jazz, Groove and Rhythm & Blues in it which sounds totally delightfully well arranged and original. By far, my favorite and probably one of the best Queensryche’s songs I ever heard is Luvnu. Amazing song. I could also mention Higher as a Groovy/Jazzy moment very well composed without excesses of virtuosity as one of my favorites. I also imagined how good it would sound in an unplugged version. Lie, Hot Spot Junkie and the opening song Get Started are also in album’s best moments. I consider the album as an easy liking piece of art showing the best of the band’s old essence in a new perspective.
Not only the sonority and the experimentalism are the best of this album. Lyrics also are really inspired. As you can hear in Retail Therapy lyrics which approach a totally actual theme of compensation of frustration through shopping: “Waiting to buy the latest thing. Convinced that I'm worthless without it… I want what I want when I want it. I need gratification, adulation, self-flagellation”.
But as nothing is perfect the inspiration sometimes takes us to a mixture not so pleasant in this album like I had with Wot we do. A totally pop song that reminded me something like a boy`s band sound. But this one was the only I could say that tasted really bad.
Dedicated to chaos is Queensryche’s best release in years.
Hail to Heavy Crew,
Stein
