Review: Crowbar – Sever the Wicked Hand

Croooooowbar! They are back and howling for justice to southern US metal. Dragged Metal sound and a bottle of Jack Daniel’s! That’s it. Everything you need in an angry day. I have the impression that most of metal fans discover Crowbar through Pantera’s sound. That happened to me and most of my friends during that Pantera fever. And there was Melvins too. Good times. Well, I confess: I like Crowbar. Sue me.

I think Sever the Wicked Hand has the faster songs of Crowbar I ever heard. Some of those tempos got me confused about the band I was listening. In some parts of the album I had the impression of listening Blind Guardian (Crowbar’s fans are going to hate that) due the vocal tones. Well, I had exaggerated a little but some songs are faster. “The Cemetery Angels” is one of those and I would say the best song of the album. I noticed a little of Pantera with that cool repeated riff in the end of this song. “Protectors of the Shrine” is another song that worth a listen. 

Another aspect in Sever the Wicked Hand is that it seems to be an album in which Kirk Windstein try to exorcise some ghosts of his life. While I was listening and decided to do this review, I discovered that this is the first album after Kirk’s rehab of alcoholism. Then things matched specially while I was listening to “Cleanse Me, Heal Me” and I decided to listen to the album again paying more attention to the lyrics. And what I heard was a sincere and a painful portrait of a tormented life. Some songs were made in a healing purpose and they sounded as they were made to be. “A Farewell to Misery” is another great song in line with these impressions I had.

Despite the fact that Crowbar is a band I like the album is really good and worth a listen. The Doom metal is well represented with Crowbar and their new album. I would say it’s an album to compete with the best to come in 2011. According to my particular tradition I guess it fits very well in an angry day. I think Crowbar never toured around South America but it would be very interesting to have them howling in these lands.

Croooooowbar! Eles estão de volta e gritando por justiça para o metal do sul dos EUA. Som de metal arrastado e uma garrafa de Jack Daniel's! É isso aí. Tudo que você precisa em um dia de fúria. Tenho a impressão de que a maioria dos fãs de metal descobriu Crowbar através do som de Pantera. Isso aconteceu comigo e com a maioria dos meus amigos durante aquela febre por bandas sulistas de metal dos EUA. E lá estava o Melvins também. Bons tempos. Bom, eu confesso: eu gosto Crowbar. Podem me processar.

Acho que “Sever the Wicked Hand” tem as músicas mais rápidas do Crowbar que eu já ouvi. Alguns desses tempos me deixaram confuso sobre a banda qual banda eu estava ouvindo. Em algumas partes do álbum eu tive a impressão de estar ouvindo Blind Guardian (fãs de Crowbar vão odiar isso) devido aos tons vocais. Bem, talvez eu tenha exagerado um pouco na comparação de bandas, mas algumas músicas são mais rápidas. "The Cemetery Angels" é uma dessas músicas e eu diria que a melhor música do álbum. Notei um pouco de Pantera nessa música com aquele riff legal repetido no final da música. “Protectors of the Shrine” é outra canção que vale a pena ouvir.

Outro aspecto em “Sever the Wicked Hand” é que ele parece ser um álbum em que Kirk Windstein tenta exorcizar alguns fantasmas de sua vida. Enquanto eu estava ouvindo e decidi fazer este review, eu descobri que este é o primeiro álbum após a reabilitação de Kirk do alcoolismo. Então com essa informação, especialmente enquanto eu estava ouvindo “Cleanse Me, Heal Me”, eu decidi ouvir o álbum novamente prestando mais atenção às letras. E o que eu ouvi foi um sincero e doloroso retrato de uma vida atormentada. Algumas músicas foram feitas com um propósito de cura e que para mim soaram como elas foram feitas para ser. "A Farewell to Misery" é outra grande faixa, em conformidade com as impressões que tive.

Apesar do fato do Crowbar ser uma banda que eu gosto, o álbum é realmente bom e vale à pena ouvir. O Doom Metal está bem representado com o Crowbar e seu novo álbum. Eu diria que é um álbum para competir com os melhores que virão em 2011. Segundo a minha tradição particular eu acho que o álbum se encaixa perfeitamente a um dia de fúria. Acho que o Crowbar nunca visitou a América do Sul, mas seria muito interessante tê-los uivando nestas terras.
