Review: Stryper - The Covering

In matter of Cristian Metal I am not really an expert but I have heard some good bands in this genre. Theocracy is one of those good bands I like but Stryper just for the fact of being a pioneer in genre has a remarkable value. They are respected in metal scene and I really like their sound. Their work is really consistent, has a good quality in terms of metal and Michael Sweet is also a talented singer.  

For “The Covering”, Stryper chose a delightful list of covers with a special tribute to the most charismatic character in Heavy Metal history: Ronnie James Dio. In the past they were touring for a long time which I consider marvelous and proves that there are no boundaries for good music. It should have been very interesting to listening DIO and Stryper in the same concert. And I thank Stryper for proving in “The Covering” that metal has nothing about fanaticism and closed minds… It’s a matter of respect.

As I said before the set list brings the best in terms of heavy and hard rock bands. I really enjoyed the way they play some of anthems of my adolescence. My favorites were “Shout It Out Loud” from Kiss, “Blackout” from Scorpions, “Lights Out” from UFO and “On Fire” from Van Halen, where Michael Sweet vocals shows its best performance. The honorable mentions (good but not the best of the album) are “Heaven and Hell” from Black Sabbath, “Carry on Wayward Son” from Kansas, Breaking the Law from Judas Priest and “Over the Mountain” which is a song often forgotten in list of Ozzy’s best songs. To finalize the album they chose “God” which I consider the most powerful song of their career. Good vocals, well written guitar duet in solo and a charismatic lyric are the trade mark of “God”.

I liked the album and I truly recommend it. I didn’t understand so much the cover proposal at first but then when I got the religious meaning it made sense to me.

Another aspect of the actual phase in Stryper career that called my attention is their well-behaved look without that Glam clothes and hair that marked the 80’s era. I think that age brings better taste in some cases and everybody has to evolve in life. Hope this evolution comes to Manowar too. Just a joke folks!

Em questão de Cristian Metal eu não sou realmente um especialista, mas tenho ouvido algumas boas bandas do gênero. Teocracy é uma das boas bandas que eu gosto, mas Stryper apenas pelo simples fato de ser um pioneiro no gênero tem um valor extraordinário. Eles são respeitados na cena do metal e eu realmente gosto do som deles. O trabalho deles é realmente consistente, tem uma boa qualidade em termos de metal e Michael Sweet é também um talentoso cantor.

Para “The Covering”, Stryper escolheu uma ótima lista de covers com uma homenagem especial para o personagem mais carismático da história no Heavy Metal: Ronnie James Dio. No passado eles estavam em turnê por muito tempo o que eu considero uma situação exemplar e vem a provar que não há limites para a boa música. Deve ter sido muito interessante ouvir DIO e Stryper no mesmo concerto. E eu agradeço Stryper por provar em “The Covering” que o metal não deve ser relacionado a fanatismo e mentes fechadas... é uma questão de respeito.

Para finalizar o álbum eles escolheram “God” que eu considero a música mais poderosa da carreira do Stryper. Um bom vocal, um bem escrito dueto de guitarras no solo e uma letra carismática são a marca dessa música.

Eu gostei do álbum e realmente recomendo. Eu não entendi muito a proposta da capa no começo, mas depois quando entendi o significado religioso, vi que faz sentido.

Outro aspecto da atual fase da carreira de Stryper que me chamou a atenção é o seu bem-comportado visual sem a roupa e o cabelo Glam que marcaram a década de 80. Eu acho que a idade traz um gosto melhor em relação a certos aspectos para alguns e penso que todos temos que evoluir na vida. Espero que essa evolução chegue ao Manowar também. Brincadeira pessoal, brincadeira...
