Review: Royal Hunt X

When we talk ‘bout Royal Hunt, we can’t deny the quality of their members. In X (band’s tenth album) this quality confirms through unique riffs, keyboard-guitar duet solos, very-well executed arpeggios, and Mark Boals’ powerful voice. Personally, I think it’s very difficult any other new album to be better than the absolute mind blowing Paradox, but X has its qualities. Once again Andre Andersen shows his extreme skills as keyboardist and composer on this.

X is a mixed rhythm album, from hard rock, bluesy riffs through progressive metal. I took some time to get on this album. It feels like the band gather up to elaborate some compositions without any specific theme. It’s sounds more like a compilation of several singles. Despite of this, the album has its merits. Highlight for Mark Boals’ great vocal job (Yngwie Malmsteen – I really enjoy his bitching yelling style on “Liar” and “You don’t remember, I’ll never forget”, Ring of Fire, among others). We can clearly notice that his voice didn’t lose its potency throughout the years, when we listen to “The Well”. Also, the versatility of his vocal work can be truly appreciated on the great song “Shadowman”. Good impressions can be also be listened on “Back to Square One” that reminds 70’s/80’s rock songs, sounding like Deep Purple in a happier way and the beautiful ballad “The Last Leaf" with a piano introduction combined with the amazing Mark’s vocals. Almost closing the album, comes “Falling Down” sounding a little more like traditional heavy metal, faster, and with a strong chorus.

In my opinion, X’s greater sin is its exaggerated mixed style. The consequence of this is that we can’t remember the songs very well. It’s a good album, however there are any song that keeps playing on our minds.

Anyway, despite this commentary, it’s still worth to listen to this great band, absolute reference in progressive metal, unique musicians and great vocals (current and former members, Mark Boals and D.C.Cooper)

Quando falamos de Royal Hunt não se pode negar a qualidade dos integrantes da banda. Em X (o décimo disco da banda) esta qualidade se confirma através de músicas com riffs diferenciados, solos duetos guitarra-teclado, arpeggios muito bem executados, e a poderosa voz de Mark Boals.  Particularmente entendo que dificilmente algum disco irá superar o fantástico Paradox, porém X possui suas qualidades. Mais uma vez Andre Andersen mostra sua extrema competência no teclado e como compositor em mais um dos álbuns do Royal Hunt.

O álbum é um mix de ritmos, variando de pegadas mais hard rock, tons de blues, ao metal progressivo. Confesso que demorei a entender este disco. Tenho a impressão de que a banda se reuniu e elaborou as músicas sem que necessariamente elas se complementem como um álbum. Quero dizer, está bem longe de ser um disco temático. Parece mais uma compilação de diversos singles. Nem por isso, o álbum deixa de ter sua qualidade. Destaque para o ótimo trabalho vocal de Mark Boals (Yngwie Malmsteen – gosto muito do berro dele em “Liar”, e da gritaria frenética em “You don’t Remember, I’ll never forget”, e Ring of Fire). Podemos notar claramente que ele não perdeu a potência em “The Well”. Além disso, a versatilidade de sua voz pode ser apreciada claramente na ótima Shadowman. Destaco ainda a ótima Back to Square One – uma música que soa bastante anos 70 e 80, quase que Deep Purple, mas de uma maneira mais alegre, e The Last Leaf – uma balada com uma bela introdução com piano e a belíssima voz de Mark Boals. Praticamente fechando o disco, vem Falling Down, uma música com características mais metal, mais agitada, e com um refrão marcante.

Em minha opinião, o maior pecado deste álbum foi a grande mistura de estilos, de maneira exagerada. A conseqüência disso é não conseguir lembrar direito das músicas. É um bom disco, mas nenhuma música realmente fica presa em nossas mentes.

De qquer maneira, vale a pena dar uma escutada nesta ótima banda, referência absoluta em heavy metal com características progressivas, arranjos orquestrados, além de ótimos vocalistas (como D.C Cooper e o próprio Mark Boals).
